A man who, police say, robbed a jewelry store in the Melrose section of the Bronx Friday afternoon was struck by a city bus as he tried to make his getaway on a bicycle, authorities said.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at Lincoln Hospital.
Salvaria Jimenez said a man asked to see a gold chain at the Elton Avenue jewelry store where she works.
"And he said, 'Oh I need a charm for the chain'," said Jimenez. "So when I showed him a charm, he just grabbed it and he took it and he was gone."
But he didn't get far. A block away on 153rd and Melrose, witnesses say he rode his bike right into traffic and he collided with a city bus.
Witness Marilyn Von Saints says he ended up half way across the street. "He got pretty banged up, because he was bleeding from the head on the ground."
The bus driver was treated for minor injuries at Lincoln Hospital. The impact cracked the bus's windshield.
Mankind has created spectacular works of art, engineered incredibly tall buildings, designed impressive supercomputers, lived in outerspace, discovered cures for nasty diseases. As a whole, nothing can compare to human intelligence, but sometimes, humans need a better escape plan.
